Flying with Kids: What to Know

Flying with kids doesn’t have to be a nightmare.

It just takes the right prep, the right mindset, and maybe a few snacks in your bra (you know what I mean, mama).

As a travel planner and mom of two, I’ve helped dozens of families prepare for their first flight — and survived many of my own with toddlers in tow. Whether you’re bringing a baby or a teen, here’s what you actually need to know before you go.

1. Book Smart from the Start

  • Choose your seats early — especially if you need to sit together.

  • Pick early morning flights when kids are calmer and delays are less common.

  • Flying with a lap infant on an international flight? Ask about a bassinet seat!

2. TSA Isn’t Out to Get You

Yes, you can bring formula, breastmilk, toddler drinks, and snacks — just let the agent know before they scan your bag.

Pack them in a clear bag

✅ Expect separate screening

✅ Skip metal jewelry for quicker security.

You no longer have to remove your shoes through security!

3. Pack Your Carry-On Like a Pro

Here’s what to pack for each age group:

For Babies:

  • Diapers + wipes (double what you think you’ll need)

  • Bottles/formula or nursing cover

  • Pacifier + backup

  • Soft blanket + teether

  • Change of clothes for you and baby

For Toddlers & Preschoolers:

  • Headphones + tablet with downloaded shows

  • Stickers, mess-free markers, mini toys

  • Water bottle + easy snacks

  • Change of clothes + pull-ups (if needed)

For Big Kids & Teens:

  • Charging cord + power bank

  • Gum, snacks, book

  • Travel pillow or eye mask

  • Their own bag = a sense of independence

4. Don’t Expect a Nap (But Pack for One Anyway)

Even non-nappers might snooze midair. Bring a small pillow, blanket, or hooded sweatshirt. Add noise-canceling headphones for bonus comfort.

5. Mindset > Magic

You won’t get everything right — and you don’t need to.

If your baby cries, you’ll survive. So will everyone else.

If your toddler melts down, you’re still a good mom.

This isn’t the whole trip — it’s just the part that gets you there.

Let go of perfection. Choose presence instead.

🌤 Sunshine for Your Soul

“He will be like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” — Psalm 1:3, CSB

Your peace, your pace, your presence — it all matters. Even here. Especially here. God grows good things in travel too.
